Pros:Picked up leaks straight away. Used it on the AC at home and on a mate’s car worked a treat.Has beeping, flashing, and vibration alerts, so you can’t miss it.Bright, clear screen with graphs that actually make sense. The gooseneck’s flexible and long enough to get into awkward spots.Works with loads of different refrigerants, not just the usual stuff.Comes with a sturdy carry case, a USB-C cable, and a decent manual you don’t need a magnifying glass for.Verdict:This has been properly useful. Feels solid in the hand, easy to get going with, and saves loads of time faffing about. Being rechargeable is a bonus, and the case keeps everything together nicely. If you’re working with AC or doing a bit of car work, this is well worth having.

This feels well made, and durable with tactile buttons for navigating the user interface. The features don’t disappoint on that end either. The screen is clear and colorful, making it seem like a phone screen that is viewable from various wide angles without issues. Its easy to recharge with USB C and lasts a considerably long. The detection accuracy is within par as compared to other detection devices that I have compared with. The alarms are a bonus for detection notification. It comes with a protective feeling case. The manual is helpful and easy to understand. Overall, an above average offering that does the job well, and is built durable to last. This review is for the “TopTes RT-389 Rechargeable Refrigerant Leak Detector, HVAC Freon Leak Detector with 3 Sensitivity Modes & 3 Alarm Types for CFCs, HCFCs, HFCs, HFOs, HCs for Car Home Industrial - Blue (Blue)”.

This teview is for the TopTes RT-389 Rechargeable Refrigerant Leak Detector. This battery operated detector comes in a very nice padded zippered case to protect the instrument and keep it clean. It is designed to detect CFCs, HCFCs, HFCs, HFOs, and HCs used in automotive, home and industrial refrigeration units. It gives off aural, visual and vibration warnings when a refrigerant is detected. After turning it on, it takes about 25 seconds to self-test and warm up. It should only be turned on in a gas free environment, including not being too close to your mouth or nose as CO2 will upset it's calibration. It has 3 sensitivity settings of low, medium, and high. High would be more effective finding very small leaks. Low would be for larger leaks. It is capable of finding leaks as low as 3 grams per year with it's Japanese made semiconductor sensor. A semiconductor sensor has faster response times, higher accuracy and is able to detect a wider range of refrigerant types than corona or heated diode sensors. The TFT colour display is clear and the backlight is adjustable. Visual, audible, and vibration warnings can be toggled on and off as desired. It's 5 language manual gives not only operating instructions, but also tips on areas where to find commonly occuring refrigerant leaks. When on the home screen, pushing the light button illuminates a light in the top of the unit which helps one see what you are doing in dark areas, or at night. A flashing green light indicates that the sensor is working and looking for refrigerant. It comes with a USB-A to USB-C charging cable for it's 2000 mah lipo, which should last up to 8 hours. It's rugged case should protect it from minor mishaps. I have included a few images of it responding to a slight wiff of R410a.I like the 14.5" gooseneck, because it is rigid and holds its position which mackes it easy to probe hard to reach areas. I found it very useful when troubleshooting my geothermal furnace. I knew it had a leak as the pressures were low. I called a repair man who topped it up and added a sealant. Unfortunately the sealant didn’t work. He told me it is so hard to find leaks and so much labour that I should just replace the whole furnace! After a short time with the RT-389, I was able to find the leak and verify it with some HVAC blue bubble liquid. Rather than evacuate the system and re-braze the tiny joint leak, I thought I'd try some epoxy putty which thankfully sealed it for now. Again I verified it was no longer leaking with the RT-389. This is not a permanent fix, but at least the leak was stopped for now.I have been very pleased with it’s functionality and I was able to save a considerable bit of cash. This unit can also be used to check propane and natural gas fittings for peace of mind. It comes with a 3 year warranty. If you are looking to find refrigerant leaks, I can definitely recommend this product.

I got this to use when working on cars, specifically for using when trying to identify the source of refrigerant leaks in air con systems (especially since you can no longer insert dye into systems)Now I haven't actually found any leaks on a cars AC system yet, however I did test this device by removing the caps over the high pressure and low pressure ports. I found that the closer I got to the ports, the more consistent than beeping was from this device. This means it can be useful in pinpointing the exact location of a leak in an air con system. It comes with a big display that gives you lots of real time information and it's also rechargeable via USB-C, which is always handy. It's light, easy to hold, and comes in a storage case that takes up hardly any room. What more could you ask for?
