Punk is a 4-part series exploring the history of punk music featuring global music icons.

Interspersing stories from America s punk pioneers with those of UK bands of the same ilk looking to conquer the USA, Punk defines the genre s American DNA and explores its subsequent propagation across the Atlantic.

Featuring a seamless blend of rare and unseen photos and gritty video, a crackling soundtrack of punk hits and misses, original interviews and VIP access to the scene s biggest movers and shakers including to name just a few.

From the ink-stained fingers that produced Xeroxed fanzines, to the kids packing basements and warehouse spaces, to hundreds of bodies slamming into one another and rushing makeshift stages, Punk reveals for the first time the profound effect America had on this global popular culture.

I'm So Bored with the USA.......??So this is the story of Punk Rock......from a very US Point of view I think. Its interviews on the sofa, clips and some real vinyl being played on a record player....Part One is the kind of New York Dolls/MC5/Iggy Roots.....nothing much new I hadn't read about or gathered from reading, but stuff from horses mouths....like Wayne Kramer ...Iggy himself (Who jointly is executive producer) and Jayne County and others. The Ramones of course who just seem to gel the pre punk and punk and bridge and refine. Its quite sad that none of the original brudders are around, but I thought Marky Ramone represented them well...and he has a Punk pedigree with Electric Chairs and the Voidoids before donning his leather jacket and jeans.Part 2 ...The UK....with Johnny of course....I'm... just a bit lost for words with Johnny.....I thought he was important back then...I think he's lost the plot..I wont go on...we get Terry Chimes....which from my Clash centric world was an interesting choice...he's straight talking ..No Mick....or Paul. Viv Albertine also chips is...and even Palmolive . The Slits get some airtime.....which is a very good thing.....Its a pretty lightweight overview....but this doc was clearly aimed at the US market, so I suppose i shouldn't expect too much. Dave Vanian was also addition..rarely seen him commenting on the "scene"...I found it irritating that both Viv and Johnny sort of kissed a*s a bit with regards to Iggy.....(did I say he was executive producer...) Now I love Iggy as much as the next fan.....I really do.....but I think from my reading and memory and research...it was The Ramones that had the biggest impact on the UK scene...and they kind of got a bit pushed aside ..or edited out. (No offence Iggy....I don't think I have seen anybody else perform like you...much respect!) Oh dear am I kissing a*s now.Part 3...and maybe this shows the difference between UK and US more than anything....we move into "Hardcore"..where as UK Punk headed down possibly a more arty path with Post Punk...I mean I can't think if many US bands who made the same kind of impact/influence as maybe Pil /Pop group etc and the reggae influence seemed to be non existent in the US Scene . Much as I like Henry Rollins who is larger than life..I didn't get and still don't get hardcore. I felt like they missed the point and just became very formulaic. I guess its a cultural thing..small Island, perhaps more and fruitful cultural exchanged and ifluencesPart 4.....this takes us in different directions..Riot Girl...Grunge...well Nirvana really...not much else grunge...Green day and the Offspring NOFX and lots more. I must say Nevermind absolutely seemed to hit the right buttons for me...yes yes I do remember where I was when I first heard it!!! and there's the skate punk thing...So.. yes a useful educational tool for soon to be US teenagers....crank those guitars up boys and girls and get ready to as one of my American colleagues said "Rage".....I think your going to have an awful lot to rage about. But theres a whole lot of flesh to put on the bones of the story. If you have seen Don Lett's Punk Attitude...then you might see some similarities......The Don does make short appearance in the UK Episode. The Damned had a great advert for their first album which read "Play it at your Sister".....maybe play this at your kids...but also show them The Punk Rock Movie ...the filth and the fury....and buy a few of the great books on Punk..Ok US and UK.....to get the balance...
